The Philips Heartstart OnSite AED is available without a prescription, the Philips HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator is designed with innovative technology, based on extensive research and user feedback, that has produced a defibrillator so easy to use that you can potentially save the life of a co-worker, friend, or anyone else stricken with sudden cardiac arrest. Weighing just 3.3 lbs., this small and lightweight defibrillator can be easily carried to the victim’s side. Using clear, natural voice instructions, the HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator guides you through each step of defibrillation and CPR. Integrated SMART Pads placed on the patient's bare skin transmit information to the defibrillator, which senses and adapts to your actions every step of the way. Maintenance
Maintenance for the Philips Onsite HeartStart HS1 Defibrillators primarily consists of the user checking the "Ready Light" regularly to verify that the unit is working and ready to be used. The HS1 will perform an automatic self-test every 24 hours that verifies that the unit is functioning properly. Once a month, this automatic self-test does a full functional check of the unit that includes verifying full energy discharge internally and self-calibration. If the unit fails to pass one of these self-tests, the Ready light will turn off, the HS1 will start chirping, and the i-button will flash.

Why do the pads expire even if I don't use them? Good question. The pads have a gel adhesive to allow them to stick to the patients chest. Over time (2 years), the gel breaks down and the "stickiness" is lost and the pads will turn brown. The pads should be replaced during the expiration month. Battery Expiration Date
The batteries should be replaced at the 4 year mark typically. There is no expiration date on the Philips Onsite battery pack, there is however a "install by date". The "install by" date is sometimes mistaken for the expiration date. The install by date is the date that the battery should be installed by. Because there is no expiration date we recommend writing on the battery, label or inspection tag the date the battery was initially installed in the device. Need a replacement battery? Troubleshooting
The speaker and Ready light are also used for troubleshooting the HS1 AED. The main troubleshooting tools are the flashing blue i-button and the battery insertion test, or BIT. When the blue i-button is flashing, the user should give it a short press. The HS1 will provide information about a problem it has detected. To initiate a BIT, the battery is removed and then reinserted. The HS1 then executes an automatic comprehensive functional test. The automatic part of the BIT takes about a minutes to run. It is followed by an interactive test that allows the user to verify that the On/Off button and Shock button are working. If the HS1 passes the BIT, the Ready light will start blinking and the defibrillator will not be chirping. For more troubleshooting information visit our Philips AED resources page.
